A small-scale interpretation of one of antiquity’s most enduring sculptural types, this bonded-marble reproduction is based on the Statue of Venus (the Mazarin Venus) in the J. Paul Getty Museum. Venus is shown with drapery and a dolphin at her feet, a reference to her mythic birth from the sea. The restrained monochrome material gives the figure the presence of classical sculpture while keeping it easy to place among books, paintings, and collected objects.
The Getty’s Roman marble dates to the 2nd century CE and belongs to a long lineage of interpretations related to the celebrated Aphrodite of Knidos type associated with Praxiteles. The original Getty sculpture was discovered in Rome around 1510; although a later association with Cardinal Mazarin is considered unlikely, the name Mazarin Venus has endured.
