This bonded-marble reproduction translates the Getty’s Torso of a Cuirassed Statue into an intimate decorative object, preserving the strong silhouette of Roman parade armor and its sculptural relief. The faux finish adds visual depth to the form, while the cropped torso gives the piece an architectural presence that works especially well among books, drawings, and collected objects.
The source sculpture, created in Italy about CE 81–96, survives as a torso and one arm from an over-life-size Roman portrait statue. Its muscular breastplate is unusually restrained, while the lower armor tabs carry palmettes, rosettes, gorgon heads, animal heads, and an eagle clutching a hare. Getty dates the work to the Flavian period, specifically the early reign of Domitian.
